Why Mums Should Be in Photos: A Photographer-Mum's Perspective

As a mum and a photographer, I often find myself behind the lens, capturing the precious moments of my children's lives. But there's something I've come to realise over the years: the importance of being in those photos myself. It's easy to get caught up in the chaos of parenting, but taking the time to be present in those memories is invaluable. As mums, we're often the ones documenting our family's journey, but that means we can end up missing from the story.

When our kids look back on these photos years from now, they won't just see snapshots of their childhood—they'll see us right there beside them, laughing, playing, and loving them unconditionally.

It's not just about creating memories for our children; it's also about embracing ourselves and our role as mothers. It's far too easy to be critical of our appearance, especially in a society that often puts pressure on women to look a certain way. But when we allow ourselves to be photographed with our children, we're saying, "This is me, just as I am, and I am enough." We're showing our children—and ourselves—that we are worthy of being seen and celebrated exactly as we are.

There's something magical about looking back on a photo and remembering the love and connection shared in that moment. Whether it's a cuddle on the couch, a silly dance in the kitchen, or a quiet moment reading together, these photos serve as a reminder of the deep love and affection that binds us together as a family.

I understand that it can be difficult to step in front of the camera, especially when we’re not feeling our best. But trust me when I say that those moments are the ones we’ll cherish the most. We don’t need to be perfectly styled or have flawless hair and makeup; all we need to do is be ourselves, authentically and unapologetically,

So, to all the mums out there, I urge you to embrace the camera and be present in the photos with your children. Let go of any insecurities or doubts, and instead focus on the joy and love that shines through in every snapshot. Your children will thank you, and you'll thank yourself for capturing these precious memories that will last a lifetime. After all, being a mum is a beautiful journey, and it deserves to be celebrated in every single frame.
